Internship topics:
Internships can span a wide range of areas, including not only biology and
environmental science, but also journalism, business, education, and art.
Requests for specific internship positions are periodically posted by OBS
personnel (see current postings here). Additionally,
interested students are welcome to propose internships that combine their
interests/skills with the mission of the Oklahoma Biological Survey. Potential
internship areas are indicated on the application.
Students wishing to formulate a program are encouraged to contact the Coordinator to discuss the feasibility of the internship. |

| The Internships in Conservation Biology course is offered by the Botany and Microbiology, Geography, and Zoology Departments. The Department of Botany and Microbiology's internship program, Herbarium Practicum, is also part of OBS Internship Program.

Program structure:
Internships are individually defined for each student participant. For example, an internship may include field work, laboratory/bench/computer
work, and an individual project. The project could be an assigned task or a specific
research mini-project, and may have a specific output (e.g., a report or
web page). Internships are defined by the instructor and the student. At the conclusion of the internship, students write a short summary of activities and summarize what they learned. |

Student obligations:
Students work 50 hours for each enrolled credit hour (= approximately 3.5
hours/credit hour/week for a 15-week semester), hence a student enrolling
for 2 credits would spend at least 100 hours working as an intern. Typically, students enroll for one or two credits. If possible, students will schedule specific work times each week, which will ensure that the time obligation is met and allow students and sponsors to coordinate their schedules. Some internships involve travel to field sites and work outdoors. Internships are available for summer, fall and spring semesters. |
